The Aushenker Interview

I was recently interviewed by Michael Aushenker for his Cartoon Flophouse blog. The interview is now online.

Here's a snippet:

"Jim’s funny and accessible….as are his cartoons: funny, satirical shorts, featuring an array of everyman characters, sending up the trashier elements of American culture."

Aw...thanks, Mike!

Look Ma, I got inked by Ted Seko!!

Behold the fully inked and colored glory of Ted Seko/Jim Lujan. This is an art-jam piece with my pencils inked by the mighty Ted Seko. Ted has done this with other artists, finishing off their pencils with his ferocious inks. Now it was my turn. I would finally get inked by the maestro himself, Ted "DeathLok" Seko. The honor was mine.
Here are the rough pencils I sent Ted. he did the rest. Ted has a really strong style. If you haven't had a chance to check out his stuff, I highly suggest you look at his BILLY COLE series online. Its a trip. Very David Lynch-esque in the coolest of ways. The guy knows how to draw!

Alphanerd Cheat Sheet

Click pic for larger version

Sometimes when I do a cartoon, I'll do the artwork before I do the voices (about half of the time). Alphanerd was a good example of that. I printed out a cheat sheet so I could know what shot I was doing voices for and keep sort of a character mood reference sheet (if that makes any sense). It sometimes helps me nail the voice a little bit better. Get into character. I know the Pixar folks use character sketches to inspire their voice actors when doing the voice recordings. Yeh, I just said that. I compared my cartoons to Pixar. How ya like me now?! Anyways, this is the cheat sheet I used. Pretty much every shot from Alphanerd.

Sid Ramos from Slip & Fail

I have to give a shout out of thanks to my buddy Steve Romo. The main character (Sid Ramos) in Slip & Fail is VERY LOOSELY based on Steve. Not physically, just in the sense that he has ridiculous problems to deal with at the store. You see, I used to work at a supermarket with Romo and he was constantly having to deal with scam artists and thieves and shady human beings. We used to have quite a laugh about it. Steve would say he felt like a baby seal being clubbed. He called the bad situations "getting the club". Let it be said that neither Romo, or myself, miss the grocery industry. That was a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
