Some teasers for Forever-Land

As some of you may know, I'm working on a movie with Kounterclockwise called Forever-Land. Its sort of Wizard of Oz meets Flash Gordon meets Jesus Christ Superstar. Very cool and interesting stuff. Science fiction fantasy cartoon hip hop comedy with my spin on it. Here are the first images I've posted from it. More soon. Check out www.forever-land.com for more!

Draw Me A Robot

Krishna Sadasivam was kind enough to interview me for his DRAW ME A ROBOT site. In exchange, I drew him a robot. See below for the interview...also check out http://drawmearobot.tumblr.com/ for more creator interviews!.

1. Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Jim Lujan and I’m an independent animator. I do the art, music, and voices (most of ‘em) for my over 50 (and counting) animated films. My art style is similar to Mike Judge’s but I think I’ve developed my own brand of art. I take a very cinematic approach and embrace ridiculousness. This year I was the recipient of the Bill Plympton Award for Indie Animation (thrilled!). Currently, I’m working on “Sanjourno Must Die” series for Titmouse/Six Point Harness’ Rug Burn YouTube Channel and am also working on “Forever-Land” (animated film with hip hop group Kounterclockwise). Later this year, I plan to make another original long form cartoon movie and so on and so on.

2. What’s your hardware setup?
  • iMac
  • CanoScan LiDE 100 scanner (love that its USB powered)
  • Bamboo Splash digital tablet (picked it up today!)
  • 3 TB external hard drive
  •
3. What’s your workspace look like?
Basic Ikea style desk, not too many trinkets (not much of a toy collector). Pictures of loved ones here and there. Some art books stashed in my drawers (yes, the really are ART books, you pervs!) I recently splurged on Etsy for some Alfred Hitchcock drink coasters. I always have some ice tea or another beverage on my desk. Thought, why not splurge? I see these coasters everyday! I picked up Vertigo, Psycho, North by Northwest, and Rear Window drink coasters. I am styling.

4. What tools do you use to make your cartoons?
Well, as a matter of fact, I just picked up a Bamboo tablet/pen today. Let’s see how the digital age works out for old Jimbo. Too soon to make that call. Primarily, I use pens and sketchbook, scan the line art, then color in Photoshop and animate with Flash. I do all of my audio recording in Garage Band (use a Snowball mic for vocals) and a free program called Audacity. I edit everything in iMovie. While I love the tactile feel of pen and paper, I’ve been “cheating” and using a mouse to draw in Photoshop (for certain shots) for so long that I thought- Just buy a tablet already. So I did. I will always use a sketchbook to some degree, though. I can take it with me….but I can take an iPad too….hmmmm

First Digital Drawing with Wacom Tablet

I received my Wacom Bamboo Tablet today. Heres the first creation on it.  I don't fully expect to go 100% digital....I'll always jump back into pen and paper....but...it sure feels nice not having to scan.

Kounterclockwise in Forever-Land!

Teasing teasy teaser poster for FOREVER-LAND!
Started production on a hand drawn animated film starring my friends, the alternative hip-hop group KOUNTERCLOCKWISE. It's the longest film I've ever done. Lots of music (I'm contributing music, too).  Lots of weird characters and other worldly locations. It's very Wizard of Oz/The Wiz meets Yellow Submarine meets Flash Gordon. Stay tuned to my website and check out the progress of this project at www.forever-land.com!

Bill Plympton Award!

Award winning me :)
Bill Plympton animation legend

Pre-show taco run
Me and my love
Matthew Modine and Bill Plympton

Bring me the head of Steve Allen
Me and the Crying macho Man
Me and the Modine
Post show celebration grub
Three shady cats
Before the show, I got to screen Rod Rosse the One Man Posse for the crowd. Matthew Modine was sitting right next to me. Now THAT is also surreal. Very charming and nice guy. We also showed  Ken Mora's Magnum Farce and the trailer for Sanjourno Must Die, my new series coming to the Rug-Burn Youtube channel. Every attendee got a Rug-Burn band-aid/business card. Let's get some subscribers!

In my "acceptance speech" (that just sounds funny) I mentioned that Bill is at the top of his game. He truly is. He is doing the best, and most groundbreaking work of his career, and he's doing it now. Its nice to know that a legend can be as cool a person in real life that you had hoped....and then some!

I am so grateful for all of the support and love I received. I feel blessed. Thanks.

Sanjourno Must Die Trailer

Have you seen the glorious trailer for my upcoming Rug Burn web series...SANJOURNO MUST DIE? Well...now you have! Enjoy!

SANJOURNO MUST DIE on RUG BURN!!

Ok folks, it's official, I can let the cat out of the bag now...My cartoon SANJOURNO MUST DIE is becoming a web series on the YouTube channel RUG BURN. Its a joint venture between two massively cool animation houses, Titmouse and 6 Point Harness. Between the two of them, they pretty much do everything on Adult Swim.  I couldn't really say anything until the official announcement (today). I'm really excited about this and Chris and Shannon (founders of Titmouse) have been super nice and cool to work with. I hope to gather a whole new batch of fans with this venture!
SUBSCRIBE TO RUGBURN!

The idea behind the Rug Burn channel is its pretty much its own little network of cool original all new programming, in short episodic doses. Sanjourno fits in perfectly. It'll be a running story with all new characters and music. In case you don't know: Sanjourno is the story of this coked out ex-Euro Disco star who got tangled up with the crime underworld. He always gets into life threatening situations. He's a bit of inspector Clouseau in a nightclub setting. Sort of Breaking Bad meets Flashdance meets Scarface. Stay tuned for more and details coming soon! Meanwhile...

Freakdaddy at the Hollywood Reel Film Festival

My film FREAKDADDY has been accepted into the HOLLYWOOD REEL FILM FESTIVAL! The festival runs December 3rd-12th....more details soon!

HOLLYWOOD REEL INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL (HRIFF) was started to help support and promote independent cinema in Los Angeles, encouraging filmmakers with unique or non-mainstream visions to create films made for less than five million dollars.

By offering cash, prizes and awards, the Festival's goal is to stimulate filmmakers in the creation of quality new work. Through offering multiple screenings of the best films to be viewed in theaters by industry professionals and fellow filmmakers, the Festival hopes to give these films an opportunity to find distribution and garner media attention, as well as to provide filmmakers a chance for their work to be shown on the big screen.

The Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival invites you to enjoy screenings of what we believe to be the best new feature films, documentaries, shorts and videos by new filmmakers who possess an independent vision and create innovative work outside the studio system.

We honor such filmmakers with awards of merit and screen our award winners during the festival. The Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival celebrates independent, student and international film making.
