Come to Daddy Storyboards

Here is the finished product. Oldie but a goldie- Come to Daddy. Enjoy!

For those that dig the process: I came across some old thumbnail/storyboards for my old cartoon "Come to Daddy". Its the lovable story of a guy who falls in love with a stripper named Foxy Roxy (named after my cat Roxy). This is a good example of how I storyboard my cartoons (when I actually do). I stick to really sparse and low tech thumbnail shots with dialogue notes. Bare bones and no-nonsense 'git it done! I think visually and this is my best method for capturing the ideas and flow of the cartoons and having a map for planning the actual creation of the animation (uh.....Ghettomation!)

In my opinion, the quicker I can get the idea from brain to paper, the more pure the idea can remain. Sure, there are lots of happy accidents along the way that will change the creative roadmap, but for the most part, I need a creative vision to stick with that sets a solid foundation for the project. I also like keeping things simple in order to preserve maximum good times while creating. Call it A.D.D., call it jumping straight to the good parts, call it what you will. It works for me. I've tried creating different ways, different methods of prep, and this seems to work best for me.

There. I have shared a little piece of my method with you. I just wanted to show another side of story prep because I know there are lots of different methods of planning out your project. I wanted to share an easy approach. I also wanted you to compare the boards to the finished project. Feel free to let me know if this stuff is interesting, or if it the ramblings of a madman....or both hopefully.

MAD Animated TV Show?!

New Series From Cartoon Network:
MAD: Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and using the iconic MAD magazine, published by DC Comics, as inspiration, MAD is an animated sketch-comedy series utilizing a chaotic mix of animation styles and twisted humor to pull back the curtain and expose the truth behind movies, TV shows, games, pop culture and, of course, curtains! Classic MAD magazine characters and features such as Alfred E. Neuman and Spy vs. Spy pop up, and no subject matter or individual will be safe from MAD’s barrage of parodies and sketches. In the end, viewers won’t get even, they’ll just get MAD! Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the executive producer. Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken) and Mark Marek (KaBlam! The Andy Milonakis Show) are the producers.

Man...I hope this pans out. I'm a life long MAD fan. We shall see! I'm not worried though. What, me worry?

Getting My TRON ON

TRON. I am there. Three reasons:
1) Daft Punk doing the soundtrack. Brilliant.
2) I was a HUGE Tron fan as a kid. Jeff Bridges...come on. Gold.
3) I am a nerd.

Jim: Ghettomation addict

I tried to stay off of the stuff. I told myself...wait, Jim, just wait. Come down. Stay clean. Ride it out. You'll be ok. First the shakes started....then the shivers. I even got the shimmies. I started Jones-ing. I needed it. I needed my fix. Midnight sweats. I was sprung. Chasing that dragon again. Nothing but a two bit strawberry walking the mean streets of Hollywood in search of my next hit. I couldn't stay away. I never stood a chance. Relapse. I guess what I'm really trying to say is....

....I started another cartoon today.

My Ghettomation craving got the best of me.

Everyday People Art Show Pics!

Saturday night, Whittier, CA- My "Everyday People" art show was a huge success. I was blown away. So many people were out of town this weekend, I was a little worried the turnout might be light. Not the case, it was packed! Thank you to all my family and friends for showing up. You really made the night memorable. It was surreal watching so many family members mingle with my friends and strangers. It was quite the gala, let me tell you. Did I mention I sold 8 paintings? Well, there...I just did! Wooo Hoo!

My first customer of the night, (the real) George Lopez! He bought my "Star Wars 1977 Movie Line" poster. GL has the same initials as the other GL, George Lucas. They both love Star Wars about the same level. Thanks George for supporting!

Sherri, Keaton, and Ben Davis. Ben was the first producer that screened my stuff at a festival. He flew me out to Texas in the late 90s to play at CONDUITFEST. Sherri is a drum major and rhythm master. Their boy, Keaton, has got the rhythm in hi. You should see that boy dance!

Here is an example of one of my acrylic paintings, "The Barrage".

"Dark Andy"
"Old School"
Whittier's own Cousin Art Martinez, lead singer of the band "The Wounded Party". I surprised him that night with a painting of the same name. Check out the Wounded Party on Facebook.

My brother Bob marvels at the Alphanerd painting "Defender of the Night". Bob was the one that first inspired me to draw. He introduced me to MAD Magazine, too. Now the apprentice has become the master, Kenobi. That sounds so cheesy. I'm sorry.

Fellow Cartoonistas Javier Hernandez, Raul Aguirre, JR, and John Narcomey all plot against me. Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me. :)

Sal, owner of GEEKS. Thanks again for being such a great supporter. Great guy, great shop. We've hosted Cartoonista event, animation shows, art shows, seminars, and more at his shop. If you are interested, my artwork will be up until April 25th at GEEKS(and for sale).
